MUMBAI: India recorded 17,336 new daily infections of coronavirus, the health ministry said on Friday, the highest single-day increase since February 20. Reuters match

India’s richest state Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded more than 5,200 new infections, state officials said, of whom 2,479 had come from the financial capital Mumbai.

Daily infections in India have been rising for the past month, and the number announced on Friday was a jump of over 4,000 compared to Thursday, at 13,313.

The number of daily deaths from COVID-19 increased by 13, taking the total death toll to 524,954, the ministry said.
