Noida, Aug 5 (PTI) An FIR has been registered by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budh Nagar district against a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader for indecently assaulting a woman. The local unit of the ruling party has denied him being its member.

According to the police, the accused leader Shrikant Tyagi is absconding. The purported video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Ankita Sharma said, ‚ÄúSrikant Tyagi, a resident of Grand Omaxe Society, Sector-98-B, has been booked under section 354 (assault on any woman or use of criminal force) of the Indian Penal Code. Has been done.”

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media in which he is purportedly seen having an argument with a woman and soon he starts using abusive language with the woman.

Tyagi has described himself on social media as a member of the National Executive of the Kisan Morcha of the BJP and the National Coordinator of the Yuva Kisan Samiti of the ruling party.

After this incident, the opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress have taken a dig at the BJP.

The SP wrote on Twitter, “In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP goons who are protected by power are insulting sisters and daughters every day! In Omaxe City, Noida, BJP leader Shrikant Tyagi gave abusive remarks to the woman, derogatory remarks. Embarrassing! Police should take strictest action by arresting the accused BJP leader at the earliest.”

Pankhuri Pathak, who was the Congress candidate from Noida in the assembly elections, said that this is not the first time that such behavior of BJP leaders against common people has come to the fore in the city.

Local Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhupendra Jadaun also demanded strict action against Tyagi over the incident.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Noida unit chief Manoj Gupta said that Tyagi is not associated with the party.

“He had joined the party about four-five years ago along with Swami Prasad Maurya, who has now left the BJP,” Gupta told PTI. Tyagi was his disciple and was not a member of the BJP.
