Cuttack Rural SP says action recommended against IIC

A day after a man set himself ablaze in front of Kishannagar police station, Cuttack rural police broke silence on Friday and termed the incident as “unfortunate”.

Cuttack Rural SP B Jugal Kishore said today that the victim Gunanidhi Bisoi had earlier lodged a complaint of land dispute with his relatives on June 22, 2022.

It was earlier alleged that Bisoi attempted suicide yesterday after failing to get necessary help from the local police station authorities despite being attacked by his relatives.

Bisoi set himself on fire yesterday by pouring petrol near Kishannagar police station. He was rescued by some police personnel and local people and was initially taken to Cuttack SCB and later shifted to a private hospital. His condition is said to be critical.

“Yesterday there was an unfortunate incident where a person attempted self-immolation near the police station. He was rescued and taken to the hospital by police personnel,” said the rural SP.

Based on the complaint of the victim, we have registered two cases and the main accused has already been arrested, the senior official said.

Bisoi’s son had alleged that he and his father were beaten up by his relatives over a land dispute.

“We have conducted an inquiry and have written to the DGP of Odisha recommending action against the concerned IIC,” the SP said.
