Father of youth kidnapped by gold smugglers said, ‘Irshad did not drown, used to be killed’

The family of Irshad, a Panthirikkara native, whose body was retrieved from the river weeks after he was abducted by gold smugglers, have claimed that he was murdered.

The members of the smuggling gang, arrested a day before Irshad’s body was found in the Cuddalore river, had claimed that he had jumped off the Purakkattiri bridge.

It is an allegation that Irshad’s father denied on Friday saying that his son was no stranger to swimming in the river and he could not drown in it.

Irshad’s father told media persons, “It (murder) was done by a person named Nasir.” “They threatened to throw away his body if we registered a case. We wanted to save him somehow so we didn’t register the case till the last stage,” he said.

Irshad was kidnapped by a gang from Peruvannamuzhi in Kozhikode on 6 July. His body was exhumed on 17 July.

However, then the body was mistook for Deepak, a native of Mayur and he was cremated.

The identity of the deceased was revealed only after a DNA test.
