Gilli, Laxman, Shoaib with other cricketers to mourn the loss of Symonds

“Think of your most loyal, fun-loving friend who would do anything for you. He’s Roy.” These words tweeted by Adam Gilchrist about Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who lost his life in a car accident late on Saturday night, best summed up the sentiments of the cricketing world on the passing away of a favorite cricketer.

Gilchrist was accompanied by Symonds’ other ICC World Cup 2003 teammates – pacer Jason Gillespie and opener Matthew Hayden – who took to Twitter to express shock and disappointment.

“Heartbreaking,” Bevan said in his reaction to the Queenslander’s death. “Australian cricket lost another hero. Shocked. … amazing talent.” Gillespie tweeted: “Horrible news to wake up to. Absolutely devastated. We are all going to miss you.”

Former Australian Test cricketer and commentator Damon Fleming said: “It’s so devastating. Roy really enjoyed being around.”

In our part of the world, former Test cricketer VVS Laxman reacted by saying: “Shocking news to wake up here in India. Peace in peace my dear friend. Such sad news.”

From the other side of the border, Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar tweeted: “Devastated to hear about the passing of Andrew Symonds in a car accident in Australia. We share a great relationship on and off the field. Thoughts and prayers with the family “
