India’s Priyanka Goswami wins silver in race walk, breaks national record
India’s Priyanka Goswami on Saturday broke a three-year-old national record to clinch a silver medal in the women’s 10,000m race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the Alexander Stadium here.
Tokyo Olympian Priyanka clocked 43:38.82, a new Indian national record, to claim her podium spot. Khushbir Kaur with 44:33.5, had conducted the NR since 2017. The Indian improved his previous personal best of 48:30.35 by almost five minutes to clinch the medal.
Priyanka’s medal is India’s third medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2022, after Tejaswin Shankar (bronze in high jump) and M Sreeshankar (silver in long jump).
With this, Priyanka also became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the race walk at the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, Harminder Singh was the first Indian to win a medal in the race walk – bronze – in the 20 km event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Priyanka on winning the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast 2018 20km race walk champion Jemima Montag of Australia won the gold medal with a Games record time of 42:34.00. Emily Wamusi Ng of Kenya won the bronze medal with 43:50.00, a new African record.
The 26-year-old, who holds the national records in the women’s 20km and 35km races, set the pace early and led the eight-women group for 4km before being overtaken by Jemima Montag. NGI.
With Montag moving into a gear and taking an unassailable lead, it looked like a two-way race between NGI and Priyanka for silver and bronze.
After exchanging positions several times, the Indian eventually broke through around the 9km mark, but there was also a warning to struggle for the final stretch. However, Priyanka tried to cross the finish line.
Priyanka’s compatriot Bhawna Jat, on the other hand, also clocked a personal best of 47:14.13 but finished only eighth in the field of eight women.
