London: Costas Simikas scored the winning penalty as Liverpool completed a home cup double with a 6-5 shootout win against Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday. In a result matching their EFL Cup final victory over the same opponents three months earlier, Liverpool kept their quadruple hopes alive to beat the Blues in a shootout after a goalless match.

Sadio Mane had a chance to win it for Liverpool with his fifth penalty, but his effort was saved by Edouard Mendy, which resulted in a sudden death. Cesar Azpilicueta had previously missed the Blues’ second spot-kick and Liverpool’s Alisson made a decisive save from Mason Mount in Chelsea’s seventh, allowing Simicas to grab it.

It was the first penalty shootout in an FA Cup final for 16 years – when Liverpool beat West Ham in Cardiff – and, although the game ended goalless, it was full of opportunities.

Andy Robertson was guilty of missing the best of them and it seemed easier for the Liverpool full-back to score than a miss when he was three yards away. Instead, he canceled the post.

Man of the match Luis Diaz was the driving force behind Liverpool and also hit the frame of the goal, while Marcos Alonso went closest to Chelsea with a free-kick hitting the bar.
