Cabinet expansion will happen at the earliest: Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde avoids questions about delay

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said the work of the state government has not been affected in any way due to the delay in the expansion of the council of ministers and more ministers will be inducted soon. Shinde made the remarks while replying to questions about the delay in the expansion of the Maharashtra Council of Ministers since the guard change in the state on June 30.

Shinde assumed office on June 30 following the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray to face rebellion in the Shiv Sena ranks. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the deputy chief minister of the Shinde-led BJP-backed government that led a rebellion in the Shiv Sena ranks. “The work of the government has not been affected in any way. The decision-making process has not been affected. Shinde told reporters here that I and the deputy chief minister have been taking decisions and there has been no impact on the functioning of the government.

Shinde is in the national capital on Saturday evening to attend the meeting of the National Committee on Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Governing Council of NITI Aayog on Sunday. Shinde said that this visit to Delhi is not at all related to the expansion of the Council of Ministers.

The cabinet expansion will happen at the earliest. The chief minister avoided questions about the delay. Earlier this week, Fadnavis was in the national capital for meetings with the BJP leadership to discuss the political situation in the state, while the Supreme Court continued to hear a bunch of petitions regarding change of government in Maharashtra.

Shinde was unwell and doctors had advised him to take rest, he stayed back in Mumbai. Shinde and Fadnavis are occupying the fort as a two-member cabinet, apparently awaiting the apex court’s decision before adding new members to the Council of Ministers.

The Supreme Court can hear on Monday the petitions related to the formation of the Maharashtra government.
