Pakistan’s ambassador to Italy sacked for ‘sexually harassing’ female colleague
A federal ombudsman has recommended the sacking of former Pakistan ambassador to Italy Nadeem Riaz after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a female colleague.
The Federal Ombudsman for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace, Kashmira Tariq Khan, delivered the verdict on a complaint by Saira Imdad, who was posted as a trade office at Pakistan’s embassy when Riyaz was ambassador.
In its judgment, the Ombudsman ordered the dismissal of Riyaz from service and imposed a fine of Rs 5 million, which would be paid to the complainant as compensation and litigation costs.
The Lokpal has directed the Ministry of External Affairs to implement the decision “in letter and spirit” within seven days and submit the report.
In a tweet, the complainant Imdad expressed his gratitude to Khan and his lawyer Mohd Ahmed Pansota.
“My sexual harassment claim against Mr. Nadeem Riaz, former Ambassador to Italy won. It was a long fight for justice,” she tweeted.
My vision is to address complaints related to harassment at the workplace so that everyone can work with dignity and in a safe environment.
Ladies, stand up for yourself and report the harassment. We need to make the future of girls bright and secure.#abbs#SayNoToHarassment https://t.co/HDDvmtibah

Responding to that, the Ombudsman said, “My vision is to redress complaints related to harassment at the workplace so that everyone can work with dignity and in a safe environment. Ladies, stand up for yourself and report the harassment. we need to build the future [ou]Girls bright and safe.”
Imdad accused Riyaz of treating her “in a degrading, hostile and degrading manner”.
As per the written verdict, Riyaz asked Imdad to travel with him to places related to his job and find a residence near his house.
According to the document, he also asked Imdad to ride his car on his bicycle.
Riyaz insulted Imdad without any reason and sexually assaulted him. This made the work environment so unfavorable for her that she returned to Pakistan before the end of her three-year term.
Riyaz retired from foreign service in 2020 and was since posted as the chairman of the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) on contract by the Ministry of External Affairs. The IRS is the official think tank of the Foreign Office.
