Punjab health minister sacked on corruption charges, arrested
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Health Minister Vijay Singla was on Tuesday sacked from the cabinet of the two-month-old Bhagwant Mann government and arrested shortly after on corruption charges.
The Chief Minister said that the ministers are involved in corruption cases and they have proof of it.
Reiterating his government’s firm commitment to make Punjab a corruption-free state, he said that Singla was sacked for demanding one per cent commission in the department headed by him.
“My government has zero tolerance for corruption and no one, however affluent, will be allowed to continue such misconduct,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister categorically stated that he has dismissed Singla from his cabinet and asked the police to register a case against him. He said that since the matter was only in his knowledge, he could have easily buried it or ignored it.
Mann, however, said that after taking oath on the holy land of Khatkar Kalan, he had resolved to make Punjab corruption-free and it is a historic step in this direction.
Corrupt practices will not be allowed in Punjab: Mannu
He said that people have chosen him for a transparent and corruption free system and he is bound to fulfill the aspirations of every Punjabi.
He said that 75 years after India’s independence, there is no such equality in the state whereas Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took such a bold step in 2015, when he sacked his Food and Supplies Minister on charges of corruption.
Mann said the message is loud and clear that corrupt practices will not be allowed in the state.
He clearly stated that his predecessors were shielding the corrupt and then saying that he was aware of the corruption being committed by his ministers. Mann, however, said such practices would no longer be tolerated in Punjab. He said that Singla has accepted his crime and now the law will take its own course.
Taking a jibe at the opposition, the Chief Minister said that he would make a political attack on his government over corruption. But, they have acted against the corrupt whereas the opposition has always given shelter and encouragement to the corrupt leaders.
He said that the intention and vision of his government is clear that corrupt practices will not be allowed and anyone involved will face dire consequences.
Lauding his government for the swift action, AAP national convener Kejriwal tweeted: “Proud of God. Your action has brought tears to my eyes. Entire nation is proud of you today.”
