VP M Venkaiah Naidu visits Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace, offers prayers in Dwarka, on one-day visit to Gujarat

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday visited the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat’s Porbandar and offered prayers at two temples in Dwarka during his one-day visit to the state.

His visit to Gujarat is taking place on the day voting is going on for the election of the next Vice President. The outgoing Vice President and his wife Usha Naidu arrived at the Jamnagar Air Force Station, where they were received by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. From there, Naidu left for Dwarka, where he offered prayers at the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple and the Dwarkadhish Temple.

Thereafter, he visited Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace and ‘Kirti Mandir’, a monument which is adjacent to Gandhi’s ancestral home in Porbandar. He was greeted with a traditional performance at Porbandar. Local BJP leaders welcomed him by presenting the traditional cap, which he was wearing.

In his message written in the visitor’s book to Kirti Mandir, Naidu urged people to visit the place and take inspiration from the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. In the visitor’s book to Gandhi’s Birthplace Museum, he wrote, “I am greatly honored and privileged to have visited the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

The official Twitter handle of the Vice President also shared pictures of Naidu visiting two temples. In the next vice-president’s election, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar (71) is pitted against joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva (80).

With the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and 91 members in the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar has a clear edge over his rival. He is likely to replace the current vice-president, whose term ends on August 10.
