CBI questions Under Secretary level officers of Ministry of Home Affairs in NGO fraud case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned an Under Secretary-level officer of the department in a fresh development in connection with the illegal bribery case in which 14 including six officials of the Home Ministry were arrested.
He was called to join the investigation after his house was raided. A source said that he is posted in the FCRA unit. His statement was recorded at the CBI headquarters on Saturday.
The accused, arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency, were allegedly facilitating illegal clearances to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in registration and renewal in exchange for bribes.
The CBI on Wednesday conducted raids at 40 different places across the country and arrested 14 people, including six officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
During the raid, the CBI had recovered Rs 3.21 crore in cash and several incriminating documents, mobile phones etc.
Raids were conducted in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Manipur.
The CBI after conducting searches registered a case against 36 accused, including seven public servants of FCRA Division of MHA and NIC and middlemen, representatives of various NGOs, on the allegation that some officials of FCRA Division had molested promoters, representatives conspired with. Various NGOs and middlemen were indulging in corrupt activities for renewal of FCRA registration and NGOs through the back door.
They were doing so illegally with the aim of continuing to receive donations despite not meeting the prescribed criteria. The public servants were impersonating themselves as officers posted in FCRA Division and indulging in the above practices and receiving bribes from NGOs to facilitate them for registration and renewal of registration and other related works under FCRA. During the investigation, two accused were caught taking and accepting bribe of Rs 4 lakh on behalf of a senior accountant of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was alleged that the bribe was delivered through a hawala operator in Avadi (Tamil Nadu) and a close associate of the said public servant.
The arrested accused are being produced in a competent court.
