New Delhi: Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Ravi Dahiya won gold medals in wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday. Indian wrestler Naveen Kumar won the gold medal by defeating Muhammad Sharif Tahir of Pakistan 9-0 in the final of the 74 kg weight category.

With this, India’s tally of gold medals increased to 12, with 6 medals in wrestling alone. The total number has reached 34.

Vinesh Phogat defeated Chamodya Keshani Maduravalge Don of Sri Lanka in the women’s freestyle 53kg Nordic. Phogat fell in 2 minutes 24 seconds to win the gold medal match 4-0.

Phogat, who became the first Indian woman to win gold at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, created history and became the first Indian woman to win three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Dahiya was up against Nigeria’s Abikevenimo Welson in the men’s 57kg final. In a match that lasted two minutes and 16 seconds, Dahiya won the match by a margin of 10-0 on technical superiority.

Pooja Gehlot won the bronze medal in women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling by defeating Scotland’s Christelle Lechidzio Lemoffac 12-2. Gehlot won the bronze medal on the basis of technical superiority.

In this match which lasted for three minutes and forty nine seconds, the Indian wrestler took a 10-2 lead in the first period and the pressure was on his opponent. In good form, Gehlot managed to hold his own.

However, a disappointed Gehlot apologized to the country for not winning the gold medal. “I apologize to my countrymen. I wanted the national anthem to be played here. But I will learn from my mistakes and work on them.” ANI quoted him as saying.
