United Kisan Morcha (SKM) Army Recruitment Center Agneepath Scheme Will launch a nationwide campaign on Sunday against The SKM, which heads the farmers’ organisations, said the scheme is a serious blow to the farmer families whose youth have been part of the armed forces. This campaign will be started with the support of ‘United Front’ of retired military personnel and various youth organizations. The SKM in a statement on Saturday said that the Agneepath scheme has put an end to the tried and tested method of regular, permanent recruitment in the armed forces. This would mean that the size of the armed forces will come down from the current sanctioned strength of 14 lakhs to just seven lakhs.

It is worth mentioning that ‘Agneepath Yojana’ is a scheme related to the recruitment of soldiers in the Army, Navy and Air Force, under which there is a provision for appointment on contract basis for four years. The scheme was announced on June 14. In June, violent protests against the scheme took place in many parts of the country. The agitators demanded its withdrawal as under the new scheme of recruitment, 75 percent of the jawans would be out of service after four years.

This is a serious blow to the farmer families.

“This is a serious blow to the farmer families, who have contributed to the nation by sending their youth to the armed forces,” the SKM said. “The campaign demands that the pending vacancies (about 1.25 lakh) and the vacancies of the current year (about 60,000) should be filled up immediately under the earlier method of regular and permanent recruitment,” the SKM said. In view of non-recruitment in the last two years, the recruitment process already started should be completed with age-relaxation. “All cases against the anti-Agneepath protesters should be withdrawn and the arrested youths should be released immediately,” the statement said. There should not be privatization in the defense sector, the government should accept its responsibility for national security and protecting the honor and morale of the armed forces.

‘If the three agricultural laws were cruel, then the Agneepath scheme is disastrous’

At the same time, Yogendra Yadav, President of ‘Swaraj India’ said that taking the first step under the campaign, Jai Jawan Jai Kisan Sammelan will be organized from August 7 to August 14. “The campaign aims to make people aware of the disastrous consequences of the controversial Agneepath scheme and pressurize the Center to withdraw it using democratic, peaceful and constitutional means,” Yadav said at a press conference here.

‘Old system of permanent recruitment should be restored’

“If the three agricultural laws were cruel, then the Agneepath scheme is disastrous. If our farmers and soldiers are in trouble, then there is a danger of breaking the backbone of our country. Our silence cannot be a reason to allow the government to destroy the defenders and food donors of the country. We have stopped them once, we can stop them again.’ Yadav demanded that the Agneepath scheme should be withdrawn and the old system of regular and permanent recruitment should be restored.
